Moving to Open from Classic..

Follow

Hi all, I know that moving is never fun, but sometimes it's for the best. I wanted to write up a quick article including some FAQ's on why and how you should move to inkFrog Open.

First, a bit about inkFrog Open and why it's better. inkFrog Open works much differently than inkFrog Classic. And while it's never easy to move, once you use Open for a few weeks you will learn why it's so much better. The more you use it, the better it is. It's not just us that thinks so, we have tens of thousands of sellers that use it.. and it gets rave reviews!

  • Open offers true mobile friendly templates which comply with eBay's new requirements (including Active Content requirements). This includes the 'tabs' which you can create in your templates! Listings on mobile look fantastic. See screenshots below from an actual sellers listings on an iPhone using our template builder!

  • Open has built in threaded eBay messages (view, reply, manage your eBay messages)
  • Open has library attachments. Every listing you create is attached to a library item where you can manage the listings!
  • Create an incredible amount of filters and saved searches so you can quickly find the items you want
  • Store connectors - You can connect all of your inventory from Shopify, Bigcommerce, and now Amazon directly from inside Open. We keep everything synced for you.
  • True 'Forever listing storage' -- every listing you ever create can be kept inside inkFrog open
  • Templates and descriptions are separated out - and any update to a template, will auto update all of your listings magically for you! (just make sure you manage everything through Open or they will get separated).
  • Open has individual profiles for shipping, returns, and payments!  We've done away with those Global Rules and then having to bulk apply them.  If you link your profiles to your listings, one quit edit to a profile updates every listing linked to that profile!

The above are just a few reasons and I can go on and on, but I'd like to keep this article short if possible.

Next, some FAQs on what Open will do and how you can move

How can I move my account to Open?

While we are nearly complete with our Open converter (from classic to open), you can move without the converter fairly easily. Just create a new account for inkFrog open (if you haven't done so in the past) at http://www.inkfrog.com and Open will automatically import all of your live, sold, and unsold listings from eBay (including images).  Then, connect your classic billing to inkFrog Open by going to this URL (after you login to Open first) - https://open.inkfrog.com/settings/account/classic/ - Connecting your billing will allow you to use both Open and Classic without being charged for both. If you've signed up in the past but forgot how to login, just use your email address and reset your password from the inkFrog open login page.

What about billing (Classic and Open)?

We have great news, you can now connect your Classic billing plan with your inkFrog Open account. Just login to inkFrog Open and then visit this URL: https://open.inkfrog.com/settings/account/classic/ (it will require you to login using your classic username/password) -   We will map your classic billing to the closest, higher plan on Open but you will get to keep your lower, Classic price.  For example, if you are paying $9.95/mo on Classic for 100 listings, you will get our equivalent or higher Open plan but for the same price as you already pay. If you currently get 'unlimited' listings in Classic, you will get our highest Open plan (normally $27/mo) for your lower current, Classic price. And, not only that, but you will be able to use inkFrog Open and inkFrog Classic at the same time, with one single subscription.

What about importing my eBay listings?

That is the great news. inkFrog Open will automatically import all of your live, unsold, and sold listings directly from eBay (including your images). So 90% of all of your inkFrog Classic work automatically gets imported for you. The only thing that doesn't import yet is your inkFrog classic library listings.

What about my Classic templates (prebuilt and custom)?

Here is the deal with templates - eBay's new Active Content and mobile requirements are very strict. None of the old templates, and most likely none of your custom templates meet those requirements. Their new rules require templates to be responsive, which means they change automagically based on screen-size and if on a mobile device. Not only must they be responsive, they also have other limitations which eBay has just recently announced.  Most likely, your templates are not truly responsive, and if they are, they most likely have active content or are limited by at least one of their new standards (unless you've head someone build them recently who knew what they were doing).

Our new template builder in inkFrog Open gives you 100%, true mobile friendly and active content approved templates. These comply with eBay's 2017 requirements. We even offer tabs in our templates which are active content approved!  We recommend creating a template using this new template builder and begin to phase out your old templates (including old, classic templates). Applying an inkFrog Open template in bulk to your listings is very easy to do - just go to your inkFrog open library, checkmark your listings and choose the 'bulk actions-->apply template' option. Before you apply a new template however, make sure you strip out your old templates.  This has to be done manually, unfortunately. Note, you can also use custom templates with Open, just make sure your designer/template builder knows what they are doing with eBay's new standards.

We know that changing templates is a major pain - but after it's done it will be worth it. No pain, no gain as the adage goes. Our new template builder is perfect for today's eBay (clean, simple, professional templates which work great).  Also note, once you 'attach' one of our inkFrog Open templates (and you continue using open to manage your listings), it will be very easy in the future to swap out your templates. We separate your templates from your description - so any template change can be done in a few clicks. In fact, if you update one of your templates, we will auto update your listings for you automatically as well.

What about my inkFrog Classic library listings?

We are not yet done with our library importer/converter. We should have this done shortly. You will be able to import those into your existing Open account once the converter is complete.

I may be blind but I do not see where to leave feedback on Ebay or to email customers from Inkfrog like I have always done.

@Marjorie - unfortunately stripping is a tough one -- it's one by one :( -- removing the html and keeping the wording. It's not something that can be done automagically very easy because some html is OK and some is NOT and it's impossible to know for each user what they want to keep and not and/or if the image is a template image or an image someone wants.

@Robin, it shouldn't be stuck that long -- and it's not importing them from classic, it's importing them from eBay (it doesn't talk to classic currently as that importer is not completed yet). Send me your eBay id and I can check to see what is happening with the 'stuckness'

@Marshall - we are most likely not going to port over the shipping app inside inkFrog - It's built by a third party and not us. You can use http://www.shipsaver.com for all of your labels (there are no monthly fee's and it beats the prices for virtually all shipments if you use USPS).

Thanks Greg. I'll send in a support ticket later tonight. None of my images are showing except sold listings ones. So now it makes sense why I can see them, since they're importing from ebay.

Greg - I just read the comment @Marjorie:

"unfortunately stripping is a tough one -- it's one by one :( -- removing the html and keeping the wording."

So - is there a tutorial coming as to how to do this (as that would affect larger sellers in a big way)? Or is it simply a matter of pulling each listing down and relisting ? I hope not as I just wasted 4 months of my life doing that for eBay and their currency changeover for Canadian sellers. Please let us know, so we can plan this out for our businesses.

There's an old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!". Why do you persist in improving things that work fine. If you fade out classic lister, I'll go elsewhere. Enough said.

Oh Greg, I just got two new pallets in and will not have the time to do all that any time soon. As you say, we can use both, so when I get things figured out in Open, I'll start using it for all new listings, then change the others as I get time. We have until mid 2017, right?

  • Avatar
    Greg

@Roger - if we kept classic as it is, we'd be out of business and thus, classic would cease to exist due to that.  Unfortunately, things staying the same is not going to happen in software. We've got to keep up with software and with eBay which has changed a lot. We do know we will lose some customers due to this change, but in business, accepting change is pretty normal - it's required and will help in the long run.

Marjorie those were the days I spent more time talking on the forums then listing.. LOL

Roger change sucks for me too, but it has to be done. If you go elsewhere, you're still going to have to learn a new system, so you may as well stay here. It's really the best listing place & the support is great.. :)

I have used Classic mostly to view traffic to my listings...where can I view traffic in Open?

    Robin & Marjorie,

    Forums here? or ebay?

As for Inkfrog Open we just need to wait until Greg and staff gets everything up and completely working the way we like (and hope for) the way Classic works.

The first thing I'd like to see happen is my folders in Open. I have a folder for days I want to list items. I have a lot of folders that keep me and my listings organized. And yes, Rona I like the traffic view too--very nice feature.

Hoping we have until mid 2017? (as asked by Marjorie). Until then I'll be using Classic while trying to figure out Open.

Just one other thing I find interesting is that ebay is getting rid of Selling Manager and will no longer support Turbo Lister that a lot of ebay sellers use. So InkFrog may be the best alternative...hmmm.

I just want to see IF I CAN make a template and try to get the feel of the inkfrog open -- DON'T want to change from Classic at this time -- so don't want to be charged for both sites.   Is this possible??  I need to still list on Classic to keep my business going while TRYING TO LEARN the new one.

    Greg

@geenjen - strange, are you still getting that error? Make sure you are logged into your inkFrog open account first before you go to that URL.

@Edith, yes, if you connect your billing using that link, you will only pay a single subscription fee (your classic subscription) and it will give you full access to both classic and open! That link again is https://open.inkfrog.com/settings/account/classic/ but make sure you are logged into your inkFrog Open account first.

Greg, I hope you guys have your patience hats on, cuz this is gonna be wild. You won't lose me, because I've been here since Spare Dollar first started, and just looking at IF Open, it looks like things are really going to be streamlined. I know the main reason for these changes is due to so many shopping via mobile, and I'm glad the changes are being made because I got tired of people asking questions that were already in the description because they HADN'T SCROLLED.  InkFrog has always been the top venue, and if anyone does leave, I think they'll regret it as all will need to be conforming if they want to continue to sell on eBay. Hi. I'm a legacy account user, Top Rated Ebay Power Seller 99.9% and I submit around 1500 unique 2-Image listings every week. We are currently trying to make the shift to Open. I am sure it's frustrating to have so many people to answer. For that I am really sorry. That said, we really need some help here or our business will start to suffer. We list in 2 minute auction intervals to create a competitive atmosphere for our customers and to increase sales velocity. Please add 1-2 minute intervals to the scheduler. The Images are getting loaded in reverse and there is no option to change them from descending to ascending. I think that's it so far. But the Minute intervals are very important. They have always been an option, and we have used the same time block with the same 2 minute intervals for over a decade, please fix. Good notes- the new dashboard is beautiful and the relist option is much more streamlined. Looking forward to getting the hang of this new lister and experiencing less errors due to the classic lister's incompatibilities.

Totally agree Ronald. I also use 2 minute intervals..Pictures also should load ascending.

Well, I put my patience hat on, and decided I kind of like Open this time around.

HOWEVER, I would like to alert the good folks here at InkFrog that I checked on a brand new listing using the new template builder template I created (eBay Item #172335295810) using the i-ways checker for complicity to eBay's new rules about no active content, and it failed (it shows JavaScript--the offending code is <script type="text/javascript">). I called eBay to double check this result, and they confirmed that this listing does have active content! Also, per eBay, they may be limiting the use of HTML links--not clear to what extent yet--so that means we may be limited to the number of pictures that appear in the template body. Per the customer service rep I spoke with, eBay would prefer we not even place pictures in the body of the template, but text only. They also recommend not using tabs, as most information is already outlined in the eBay fields. They are not trying to rain on our parade. They are recommending these things because buyers on mobile devices need simple layouts that don't hang loading, or they will go to the eBay seller that does have mobile-friendly content (perhaps off eBay--thus the call to action!)

So, I am glad I did some sleuthing before I went to work changing my 2273 live listings to this new template.

@Ronald - does the 2 minute interval really affect your business? have you tried not using it to see the effect of what may happen? eBay is so different than it used to be, there are not very many things that should affect your business like that anymore -- let me know if i'm incorrect (i'd love a reason why it would). We are just not seeing intervals matter anymore.

@Laura, checking! Guessing it's cross sell which is still using javascript and will be removed

    Ronald Denis

Yes Greg, it really does. Our auction hours have never changed and when we have tried it in the past ( during our competitors' hours) it has affected sales drastically. We have been doing this so long our regulars who account for a large percentage of our buyers expect these hours and bid these specific hours. They have also commented countless times about our exciting auction structure as it does not allow you to win every coin you bid on since they are going off every two minutes creating a fun competitive buying atmosphere. We sell rare coins and to be able to sell more coins we must have more time slots or high bids will fall. Your way is best for buy it now sellers. Please add the feature as I will not be able to have us switch until the feature is added. Honestly as someone who does over a million dollars in business on Ebay every year I find it a little audacious and disrespectful to be talked down to like I'm new at this. I'm just asking for help.

@Greg--Yes, I thought it was Cross Sell, too. So I turned off that feature in Classic. I still got the JavaScript code. Then I thought maybe it got embedded in the code when listing, and you have to list without Cross Sell enabled. So the listing in question was submitted with Cross Sell turned off. I did notice in the eBay preview feature that turns active content off that your little logo and template by InkFrog blurb at the bottom of the page disappears. Just an FYI to help in your search for the answer. Hope you can find it--I really like the new templates--very clean and attractive.

    Greg -

The scheduling interval is one HUGE reason I didn't switch over to Open a year ago.

As with Ron, this is critical to my listing process.  And to my bookkeeping processes also.

Many times I have multiple listings ending the same day for parts that fit one specific car.  If I have them spaced at 1-minute intervals, a single Buyer can snipe multiple auctions successfully. If they all end at the same instant, they're SOL.

About 98% of my multiple-item Buyers are snipers.

I also have a problem with profiles not working as the Globals in IF do, for changing eBay accounts on scheduled listings.  Without this also getting fixed, I'm sunk, and locked out of being able to use Open.

    hi Greg

The problem is still exist. I followed the suggestion

    1. login my new Open account and keep the Open page active.
    2. visit this URL https://open.inkfrog.com/settings/account/classic/

But the error page show again.

Anyone else having problems typing in the Description area?  It is VERY slow and lags behind my typing a few seconds.  Not catching all the letters I'm typing either.

I discovered in all my research over the weekend that part of the JavaScript that keeps showing up is related to Ink Frog Traffic. I turned that feature off and it helped. There is still a small section of code that has a script in it at the bottom. When it is removed, the little InkFrog logo disappears from underneath the listing, which is weird, because the code sounds like it's talking about a gallery.

Has anyone else tried CrazyLister? I created a custom template there, and they have a feature that links your account there to InkFrog so that the HTML code it generates is compatible here in Open. So you can copy the HTML you create in CrazyLister and paste it into a template created from scratch here. It worked sooooo slick. I now have an active content-free and mobile friendly template to use here in InkFrog. And I can create as many templates as I need. Sorry for the plug, but it's a neat program. One caveat: it is free to try, but don't commit yourself by uploading a lot of listings until you're sure you want to use it, because if you decide not to sign up, you get a big red "You need to Upgrade Your Account" banner across each listing you use the template in on eBay. It is pricey once you sign up, too. Yeah, I know. Nothings really free these days!
